When the Union Pacific Railway started passing through a desert oasis ... an ideal refueling point and rest stop, Las Vegas is generally recognized to have begun in 1905. Las Vegas is Spanish for "The Meadows" ... a name it got due to the availability of spring-fed water. In 2005 - 100 years later - Vegas commemorated and commemorated its centennial.
